[12:02 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Hello, everyone.
[12:02 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: oh, thats what I thought it meant
[12:02 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Hello Andrew!
[12:02 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: is a kind of a copy operation happening in backgroud that will take a few more months to end
[12:03 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: No change to their blog since Dec 7th
[12:03 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Here we are at the last official meeting for this year.
[12:03 PM PT] Jagga Meredith: Excellent conference. Enjoyed myself - learned a lot
[12:03 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Thanks, Jagga, I had a great time, too
[12:03 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Loved seeing you all there...
[12:03 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: For me, there weren't that many panels I wanted to attend.
[12:03 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Today at 2 PM is our closing OSCC Holiday party at AvaCon grid Hypergrid Address hop://grid.avacon.org:8002/Avacon Plaza/135/186/28
[12:04 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Thank you for that information, Lyr.
[12:05 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: Thanks for the reminder!
[12:06 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: I need to set a reminder somewhere or I'll probably forget before the event starts. :)
[12:07 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: I don't see any changes to the code base this past week. Someone must be taking some time off on account of the holidays. :)
[12:07 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: The Holidaze.
[12:07 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: The Eating Season.
[12:08 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: Conference was a lot of work
[12:08 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: for Lyr
[12:08 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: The Holidoze after the eating season. :)
[12:08 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: we start in august-September planning OSCC for December *grins*
[12:09 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: That's not too bad.
[12:09 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Yes, hopefully will be week 2 in December next year
[12:09 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: right *smiles*
[12:09 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: after 12 years, we are great
[12:09 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: oh the videos are all online
[12:09 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: James Attloud finished them... wonderful work
[12:09 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: did you take any good photos of the field trip?
[12:09 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: trips?
[12:09 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: An annual RL con I used to attend started planning for the next year right after the finish of the years event.
[12:10 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: OSCC 2024 Conference Playlist: Corrrection: He completed the edit and publication of 8 sessions and they can be found in this playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGbtdH2-_0P-CnMRgDR_c_nvbW3EJ-nqD
[12:10 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: ty!
[12:10 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: So 8 of the ~30 sessions are online *smiles* thanks
[12:11 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: oops, lost Gavin
[12:11 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: 14 of the videos... He must be adding to them *grins*
[12:13 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: That's a big job after the Conference is over. Taking the days recordings, splitting them up, and uploading them to YT.
[12:13 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: yeah, video editing is a time vortex
[12:16 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: passes around some expresso beans
[12:16 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: not seeing anything in local, are we sleepy?
[12:17 PM PT] Kayaker Magic:
[12:17 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Not sure what else we have to talk about today. I did just do a quick test of voice over in SL using the FS 6.6.17 SL viewer and found I have the same issue as I have with voice in the OSCC grid.
[12:17 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Gavin is on his way back.
[12:18 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: some regions in SL require the new viewer, if they aren't on Vivox
[12:18 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: I will have to do some research over the holidays.
[12:18 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Isn't everyone on in SL (still?) on Vivox?
[12:18 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: I don't go to SL very often.
[12:19 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Mostly, yes, I think so
[12:19 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: sorry about that - found a bug and fixed
[12:19 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: (hmm yeah we need to put a toilet nearby, so ppl do not need to tp out and back )
[12:19 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: welcome back, Gavin
[12:19 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002 chuckles with Ubit
[12:19 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: ty
[12:19 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ohh a bug.. not a toilet emergency.. ok
[12:20 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: no, some AIS code had snuck in where is absolutely wasn't welcome
[12:20 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: on Opensim that is
[12:20 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Cuga, do you know which regions are on WebRTC? I knew that there were test regions for it
[12:20 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: yeack
[12:20 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: I don't know. I read that they are doing a slow roll-out, but no details
[12:20 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: perhaps waiting for more peeps to be on 7.x viewer
[12:20 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: you mean at sl?
[12:21 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: yes
[12:21 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: I heard Philip asked everyone to move away from 6.6.17 on Firestorm so they could roll it out
[12:21 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Gavin, np. wb.
[12:21 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: btw robert did more work on his janus-gateway integration
[12:21 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: speaking of WebRTC
[12:22 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: he had no parcels handling... think he ha now
[12:22 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: the pbr release Hass anyone installed Janus and tried it?
[12:22 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: oops.. Hass anyone installed Janus and tried it?
[12:22 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: but his janus code is linux only
[12:22 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: plenty of Linux people here
[12:22 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: wel his compile of the original janus
[12:23 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: he may had started the needed code for SL data channel
[12:23 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ofx unique to sl
[12:24 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: without it there is no 3d of even participands list, volume control etc
[12:24 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Has there been any word in regards to switching to sha256 for the passwords? How that will be handled?
[12:25 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: Is that a security issue for janus?
[12:26 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ehat security?
[12:26 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: No it's just something that has been talked about in the past and we recently got a patch over mantis to switch the password hashing algo, but without knowing what viewers will do can't add the code and the backwards compatibility is a big question
[12:26 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: we have a patch submited in mantis
[12:27 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: didn't look.. think melanie told it is useless
[12:27 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well or somthing like that :)
[12:27 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: :-)
[12:27 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Don't confuse me with her lol, no the problem was the initial attempt tried to be backwards compatible which kinda defeats the point of moving to a more secure algo
[12:28 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ohh it was you?
[12:28 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: oops
[12:28 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Ideally invalidating all passwords and requiring users to reset, but then the viewers need to support it or something needs to say "please send sha256" in login response
[12:28 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well i still didn't look into details
[12:28 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: no idea if viewers do it even
[12:29 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: So I wonder if the plan is a hard cut and switch or some form of existence alongside
[12:29 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: supposed to do both for a short time, but not sure
[12:30 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ahh melanie did coment one the refereed mantis issue http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=6046
[12:30 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: there will have to be a viewer fallback to the old version for access to all kind of private and older grid version that has not been updated
[12:30 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: much harder for events to know if everyone is on voice unless the Nearby Voice option in Fs displays them (when teaching in world or hosting voice meetings with larger groups)
[12:31 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: The question is how that will be handled, because the viewer just sending something and the other end trying to work out what it might be... doesn't sound... trustworthy
[12:32 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: as i said nearby information requires a data channel specific to sl viewers
[12:32 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: so not part of normal janus
[12:32 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: Robert was going to look into that
[12:32 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: new version grid will have to request the correct version they need possibly via cap
[12:33 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: of not the viewer can fall back
[12:33 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: on voice?
[12:33 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: passwd
[12:33 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: viewer should fall back to vivox
[12:33 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: oops ok
[12:33 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: sure for voice
[12:33 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: ah I see, Robert's plugin was proof of concept but back-end not supported yet
[12:34 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: voice.. really not sure how good that fallback is.. viewr code seems.. confusing on that
[12:34 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: another mess
[12:34 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: :-))
[12:34 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: viewer code was made considering that vivox is to be removed..
[12:34 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Hoping it'll be part of login request/response that'd be easy to handle, otherwise viewer just making double login request falling back to old algo sounds like a mess. Plenty of things me thinks that login request could handle without weird caps
[12:35 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: so guess no real effort on integration.. just hard quick temporay hacks
[12:35 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: I have little faith in that being handled gracefully given the rollouts LL has graced us with lately
[12:35 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: i do not think that passwd thing is a thing
[12:35 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: Re fallback I assume a region has to be on one or the other, so a mix of old/new viewers in same region wont all work.. correct
[12:35 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: ?
[12:35 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: they repleaces that by 2fa even
[12:36 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: I only heard about it being the plan, but that was a year ago and since then no word anywhere on what will happen
[12:36 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: with current sl code we can't even have a region that does vivox and other..
[12:36 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: the protocol is just pure crap as i said
[12:37 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: a temporary hack.. expection foe all vivox code to be removed
[12:37 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: expecting that all..
[12:38 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: any word on when vivox will pull the plug on opensim?
[12:38 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: robert is doing that on his one repos..
[12:38 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: so no idea
[12:39 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: on his own repos and as a optional add on module
[12:39 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: as core main issue is that will be a linux dependent solution
[12:39 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: i didn't test if that docker does run on any win
[12:40 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: At present, new grids report that they cannot connect to Vivox, Gavin,
[12:40 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: even if they have accounts?
[12:40 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: but we can't have simple stanalones installing docker on WSL
[12:40 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: We haven't had a problem at VH and brought a new grid up in our family of 19 grids
[12:40 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: MB is running a open server btw
[12:40 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: for testing
[12:41 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: so there is option for some ppl to rent voice services.. but to soon to tell
[12:41 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: a good solution for opensim should be a full integrated, self contained one.. that we do not have, still
[12:42 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Lyr, VH? That makes me think of a grid I used to help out but which no longer exists.
[12:42 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: but you still want to lease cloud services to offload the bandwidth overhead
[12:42 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: self contained or depending on easy to install windows software..
[12:42 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: there will be plenty of demand for that when Vivox goes away
[12:43 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well for 2 or 3 users, bandwidt that ppl have near big cities is fine ( like 1Gbps fiber now )
[12:43 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: wellmaybe that overhead for voice isnt a lot
[12:44 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: voice channel does not that that much bandwith
[12:44 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: need latency
[12:44 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: ahh true
[12:44 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: something home networds do not have
[12:46 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Technically what you require for a distributed system like this with clients all over the place is machinery in multiple geographic locations you can align with where clients are or what latency they have, including handing them off to other instances when the dynamic changes. No clue if janus supports that though
[12:47 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: similar model to music streaming but with less latency
[12:47 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: even if it did, not sure abotu your wallet
[12:47 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: @Andrew it is Virtual Harmony where I've worked with Spinoza Quinnell (Andy Stricker) on game simulations and research for 16 years
[12:48 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Lyr, ty.
[12:49 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: what kind of latency is needed do you say?
[12:49 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: for voice we want less latency, right?
[12:49 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: we want low latency for all :)
[12:50 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: humans detect 100ms easy
[12:50 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: So voice starts breaking down past 200ms
[12:50 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Usually you want 133ms or less, which is some form of guideline for that
[12:50 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: ok
[12:50 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: I see, so something on local network seems best
[12:50 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: to keep latency down
[12:51 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: RPI 5 with all the software on
[12:51 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: A round trip across the pond is approaching 200ms at the best of days, so if Gavin wanted to talk to his mate in Australia with a server that isn't located somewhere between the two you'd have issues understanding and talking over each other
[12:52 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well for now.. we have that.. robert has basic voice on parcels workingm depending on voice servers running intel/amd linux
[12:52 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: yeah, well that happens sometime if you get a satellite hop
[12:52 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: other platforms, untested
[12:52 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Since janus is meant to act as proxy, so a quasi voice server, you'd want that somewhere where you can be sure everyone that connects has a decent connection to it, otherwise you'd either need another machine somewhere else or deal with the latency
[12:53 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well and server cpu usage does scale up exponential with number of participants..
[12:54 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: The usual way this is handled even in webrtc is to move the entire session around depending on who is connected. If more people come from place A then it is moved closer to that, but this requires the server to be able to negotiate with clients on where to connect to directly and hand the whole session to another instance
[12:54 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: fro parcels it needs a mixer per user, for example
[12:54 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: even without 3d !
[12:54 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: That level of orchestration isn't easy to get right. Assigning capacity to machines, moving things around, securely as well, dealing with clients etc.
[12:55 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: wouldn't have to be able to move the connection anyway for hypergrid?
[12:55 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: hypergrid may even not work with current viewers code
[12:55 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: btu step by step.. rome was not made in a day :p
[12:55 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: no cause everyone assumes one point of entry for all voice
[12:55 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: yeap..
[12:56 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: but lets see
[12:56 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: jut do no be fooled by " webrtc opensource solution" that means almost nothing
[12:57 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: it is a SL derivative of webrtc..
[12:57 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: like discord is.. etc
[12:57 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: has to be supported in viewer
[12:57 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ( ofc discord is a GOOD one.. SL.. hmm well nm... :p )
[12:58 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: lets see how it hold when they start really using it
[12:59 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: first they need to sourt out the PBR mess
[12:59 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: sort*
[12:59 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: pbr and voice :/
[12:59 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: oh for them that is solved
[1:00 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: pbr is what it is..
[1:00 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: take it of leave :p
[1:00 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: no, they are writing a legacy mode without PBR for the viewer
[1:00 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: they did abort other changes they had planed on pbr terrain
[1:01 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: well cool VL has it
[1:01 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: SL code best cure against programmer impostor syndrome
[1:01 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: cool lv has several rendering engines :)
[1:01 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: usre, but that viewer is a complete UI mess
[1:01 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Cause it's using the old style ui mostly
[1:02 PM PT] Vincent.Sylvester @hg.zetaworlds.com: Shoehorned the new stuff into that = mess
[1:02 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: indeed
[1:02 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: wel i only tested it for a bit when Henry did add support for my terrain pbr hack
[1:02 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: U mean the mobile viewer?
[1:03 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ohh the mobile viewer was made by Adam Frisby using unity
[1:03 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: Philip told that at oscc
[1:03 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: im mean the SL mobile viewer..
[1:03 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Yes, he had good information in his fireside chat. The recording is in the playlist
[1:03 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: it is not exactly great :-|
[1:03 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: great frame rate but UI mess
[1:03 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: Pardon me for stepping away
[1:04 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: np
[1:04 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: See you at the AvaCon Grid (defaults to the party location) for the OSCC holiday party at 2
[1:04 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: Be there or be square!
[1:05 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: I wanted to ask, is it possible to build X in opensim. Not a dev question but just a hive mind question
[1:05 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: with crafty folks here
[1:05 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: what X?
[1:05 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: Snowball htrower that can rez snowballs, but not give the wearer perms to rez anything else?
[1:06 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: like a LSSL thin, a white-list
[1:06 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: OSSL*
[1:06 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: temp attach doesnt work for this
[1:06 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: a rezzer box can only rez waht is inside of it, if i remember
[1:07 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: I have a snoball system that has the balls pre-rezzed by the owner, so none of the players has rez permissions.
[1:07 PM PT] Kayaker Magic: Where do you need it Cuga? I'll get you a copy.
[1:07 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ohh that..
[1:07 PM PT] Lyr.Lobo @cc.opensimulator.org:8002: No meeting until after the holidays?
[1:07 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: at my grid
[1:07 PM PT] Cuga.Rajal @rajal.org:9000: http://rajal.org:9000
[1:07 PM PT] Ubit Umarov: ahh yes good point lyr.Lobo
[1:08 PM PT] Andrew Hellershanks: Correct, Lyr. This is the last official meeting for this year.
[1:08 PM PT] Gavin.Hird @grid.xmir.org:8002: next year
