D-GiG stands for Distributed Global Information Grid and that is because mostly I don't like hippos and secondly it's a fork of the OpenSIM project that runs off a CD that will automatically detect your hardware, display a interesting logo, and then prompt you to login into your freshly booted 1 simulator. So you have all the basic abilities you would have in the regular Second Life client. There is nothing done to the OpenSIM code at this time it has just been modified slightly via con-fig files and boot scripts to load when the system boots.

After downloading the dgig.iso you can mount it in a virtual machine (100% efficient still). It is possible to run the distribution cd from a regular PC but this is not really recommenced as I can only fit so many drivers in a 700Mb image file. This is highly experimental and alpha software that we use in-house for demonstration purposes to potential clients and we thought it was time to share it with the rest of the world.

So you want to try it out?

Well first hop on over to magrathean.ca[1] and download a copy of the ISO via direct link to our server (only direct link mirror) or you may use a torrent file which I hope will grow in seeds with the assistance of the community. Here is a link to download the ISO:

Version Information:

This is the first public release of this kind of project of it's type. I know the client/server thing is a dead horse but this is not your grandparents streaming media server, we are talking about one of the most fundamental building blocks of creating a universe outside the Lindens grid. Soon there will be support for web configuration of the simulator, plug-and-play grid mode for cluster computing, primitive importing/exporting from Linden grid, and a bunch of other stuff that we are all really excited about.

Distribution Details:

And you thought I would cheese out on the details? For those of you wondering this distribution is based of the Mandriva Toronto LiveCD straight from the disto masters website. It allows for easy configuration of your own LiveCD/DVD based on the software installed on your host operating system. When the system boots it will auto detect your hardware and load drivers (where it can mind you), then proceed to copy a pre-compiled simulator off the media to a tmpfs RAM DISK that is auto expandable so you can load simulator images or upload tons of photos and you are only limited by the amount of RAM in your host operating system.

Contact Info:

If you have any questions, comments, hate mail, or really any kinda comment about DGiG ands it's operation, ideas, even if you want to help host a static mirror for people or at the very least download the torrent and make sure it seeds well. This ISO is 100% free and has been used by our company for months to show potential clients off-grid sims but we thought now was a good time to show the public.
