llGiveInventory and llRemoveInventory work for me, for both avatars and objects. I'm using r5926 - but they've worked with SVN for the last month or two. How were you testing them that lead you to believe they don't work?
If I don't hear back from you in a couple days I'm going to revert them to "needs testing".
