And, in many ways, the server side baking is a Good Thing. Mostly in that
some of the client side graphics drivers have bugs relating to rendering
into local textures. There have been lots of problems with situations like
viewers on secondary displays creating mangled baked textures.

Like Melanie says, downward compatibility will smooth any transition.
