No closed grid will ever be able to provide direct asset service connections
because these also allow to extract any and all content, in full quality and

Yep.  Opening up the asset server means I can get anything I have an asset
id for.  That's no security at all.  And the reason I believe encouraging
grid operators to do so damages OpenSim.  I do get that having the ability
to back up assets is desireable.  But do it via viewer extensions using
authenticated protocols and where the grid owners can set policy as to what
they are willing to permit/deny.
