[Opensim-users] Why do I lose permission on my own prims?

It's been a long time since I tested it, but I think if you leave the
permissions setting to false in the opensim.ini config file it IS optional.
 That is, changing the setting to false will essentially mean ignoring all
permissions - everything is full permissions for everyone.  We initially
set up our campus grid that way since it was all internal use and we needed
collaborative building rights for everyone and it worked fine for that
purpose.

To my knowledge this never applies to being able to edit scripts in a prim
owned by someone else, however.  For that you always need to take your own
copy.
