[Opensim-users] toward a new client

Hey Justin, Tedd, all:

I am not complaining so much as trying to keep the core group aware that
linux useage on opensim is very much still present and vigorous, and what
you point out about yourself and SDague only serves to drive my point home -
and it isnt just you and SDague, but also Dr. Sco and Diva if I am not
mistaken, and many others of us who are lowly testers.

The point is, it isnt as simple as looking at percentages in the userbase.

Linux people, as Tedd pointed out, are of a particular calibre. They are one
of the key places where the rubber hits the road.

It does not go unnoticed that very slick things may be done with
windows-only tools - and for architectural and phiosophical reasons I wont
get into in this thread, those things will likely never be done on linux.

That being said, I dont want to discourage exploration like Xenki and those
things that the Rexx team are doing; I just want to make sure that the linux
folks (like myself) dont get forgotten the mix. I don't know honestly if it
would ever be possible to port e.g., Xenki to the linux platform in any
meaningful way; but I am pretty sure Adam will learn something from it that
will benefit us all.

I know the situation with the Rexx team, and I understand they dont have any
linux folk around. I also know that linux folk are everywhere, and that if
they really wanted to get a linux dev on board, it wouldnt be that hard to
do.

However, I dont know their situation wrt budgets, funding, etc - it may well
be they had spent their code dollars before realizing the necesity of
pushing forward with linux as well as windows.

In any case, I intend today to spend some time with the rex stuff on the
viewer side - not to work on the code, mind you, just to see if I can get it
to compile.

Thanks for all the hard work guys, in case I didnt say it before.

Cheers,
James
