I know we did some work on this at 3Di while I was there. Some
existing plugins were modified and used to convert stuff from SketchUp
and Maya and maybe some others. Their product page[1] says it supports
importing models from 3DSMax, too.
Try poking some of the 3Di folks, maybe they'll be able to tell you more.
There was also work on a viewer for OpenSim (called OpenViewer) that
can display meshes, if you need. There's some videos of it on YouTube,
like this one[2]. The poster of that video uploads quite regularly :)
