Went through the same thing. Took me ages to find a working combination of stuff. What I ended up with is this:
Mono
----
You want at least mono 2.6.7 from
http://www.go-mono.com/mono-downloads/download.html
I seemed to need both the 'Framework' and the 'CSDK' installed (either order). I don't understand why. Some stuff about the OS X installation is here, though you don't need to understand it:

OpenSim

Download from here whatever they say is 'Current Release':
http://www.osgrid.org/index.php/downloads
It's precompiled. Just put it in a folder, cd to the 'bin' subdirectory and type
mono OpenSim.exe
at which point it'll complain because you didn't do the configuration properly. But at least it'll run. Configuring it requires knowledge of your intended setup, but is the same across all platforms so it's easier to find help on the net.
Client software

Imprudence from the above page works fine, but so does anything else that'll actually run.
