[Opensim-users] fresh Diva r15592 with MySQL 5.5 - SMTP not working

We decided to backup our Diva installation and database,

then we updated Diva from r13981 to r15402-b, tested creating an avatar,
then upgraded to r15592 and did it again;

then wiped everything off and installed a totally fresh Diva distro r15592
with MySQL 5.5 on Windows Vista and tried setting up an avatar account.

So, we tried with upgrades and fresh install and different administrator
email accounts

In each case, the email notification for a new user signup was not being
sent to the administrator's email, and when he found the pending signup and
activated the account, the user did not get a notification email that his
account was activated.

We're puzzled why that wouldn't work when we had the correct SMTP settings
(the administrator account is a gmail address and his password is correct).

Any help?
