[Opensim-dev] On the FPS issue...

Just to be clear there are several different types of FPS in play here,
one being the Scene or Simulator FPS which has nothing to do with graphics,
this is the rate at which the scene gets update and sent to the client, the
next is Physics simulation FPS which is the rate at which physics in the
scene get updated and sent to the client, and the 3rd is Graphics FPS which
is the rate at which your video card renders the scene and is visually
displayed on your monitor, I can only assume the FPS which you are talking
about is the Graphics FPS which is generally not affected by network
bandwidth, unless your network bandwidth is so bad that its causing other
issues on your system, if you are getting 10fps it is likely because your
GPu is just not powerful enough to render everything, increasing your
bandwidth or CPU even generally doesn’t help with this problem, especially
in your case with an i7 processor, if you want better Graphics FPS the only
real solution is A) lower your graphics settings, disable shadows and
ambient occlusion, lower the AA to 2x, disable Anisotropic Filtering etc..
if you want to max out all the settings then the only option would be to B)
upgrade your video card, there is really not much you can do on the
simulator itself to improve the graphics FPS other than delete content,
perhaps disable Flexi prims, generally not the kind of thing you would want
to do. Hope this helps you understand the differences [?]
