Another way to go is, of course, to dissolve the 'grid' into a massively parallell set of distributed services - ie, you never 'grid jump' at all, merely take your presence into another context, bringing your particular palette of services with you.
The whole notion 'domains' is just a tiny step away from the 'monolithic grid' - which is probably why they chose it in the first place.
 
Unfortunately, we started out mimicking the SL grid arch, and now we've gotten kind of stuck in it, even as LL themselves are trying to break free from it.
