I agree, and some system like subversion ahve way less support of this
that old stable systems like clear case.

Knowing what version something came from and how the branshes, files
relate is essentions to good code understanding. The support in tool
like subversion is "basic" in this. Clears case have this on file level,
but actually dont care about the branches and configurations all all
levels.
