So, you're thinking of donating to OpenSimulator? While we thank you from our heart for your kind consideration, please read thru the following carefully first:

We value your time over your money

As an alternative to donating, please consider doing any of the following:

  • Download, install and run your own region and/or grid
  • Help us track down installation and configuration issues, bugs and documentation omissions
  • Help us fix these issues.
  • Spread the word about OpenSimulator
  • If you're a builder or designer, create and share content for OpenSimulator with the community
  • Join and participate in OpenSimulator-related forums and communities
  • Test and report on bug fixes
  • If you're a coder, familiarize yourself with the codebase and submit patches
  • If you're a scripter, be an active part of the OSSL scripting community
  • Contact your local OpenSimulator dev and buy him/her a beer (or Soft Drink, if prefferred)

The OpenSimulator Infrastructure Fund

If you still want to donate monetary resources, we do provide a paypal option for that. It is meant as a last resort, and will only be used to pay for infrastructural necessities - basically, to secure the projects survival in terms of hosting, domain names and legal counselling. It has been suggested we call it the 'beer fund' to show the informal intent of the fund, but that would imply funneling money to members, which it will strictly never do.

The Fund Will NOT

  • Be used for bounties or to commission development work.
  • Accept anonymous donations - the list of donations will be publicly available.
  • Accept directed or conditional donations - no strings attached.
  • Give guarantees or grant refunds
  • Funnel funding towards OpenSim members
  • Be used for OpenSimulator marketing.
  • Exceed USD 1000 - if the fund exceeds this amount, no further donations will be accepted.

The Fund WILL Be Used

  • To Secure core OpenSim services (svn, forge, wiki, domain name fees, etc.) for the long term.
  • For seeking Legal counselling when needed, and to secure project juridical integrity.

Budget and Decision-making process

To maximize agility and minimize politics, the fund is managed in typical OpenSimulator style by somebody writing together a budget proposal, then that budget is subject to an one-week +1 round on the opensim-core list. The budget will be sent to opensim-dev, opensim-users and posted on the wiki. Let's say it again: All transactions will be made public.

The fund is officially opened in the name of Darren Guard, founder of OpenSim, and the fund has its seat in the UK. All core devs have administrative rights and can execute the actual payment of budget items from the fund. All transactions will be made public either through e-mail or on the wiki.

Each budget period will be for 6 months, running from January to July and from July to December. The money collected under a given period can only go to the goals stated above. However, at the end of every period, these goals can be changed for the money collected in subsequent periods. These changes will be agreed upon over a one-week +1 round on the opensim-core mailing list.

If you have any suggestions or questions on the information on this page, please send an e-mail to donations[at]opensimulator.org.

And again, thank you for your time and appreciation!
