Meerkat is a project who's specific charter is to replace the legally burdened code the hippo installer downloads with freely opensourced code of equivalent (or, in most cases, superior) functionality.

Cheers,
I have had the same question in the past about installing Hippo. I found that if I install it locally, then copy the Hippo installation directory to a thumb drive (if using Windows) then it runs from the thumb just fine on other systems where it's not been installed. Of course, it then creates some temp directories and such on the system it's running, but no big deal for me and no need to fool with "download only" installation files on systems with downloading blocked.

Any thoughts though on what Hippo uses that is "so" special they require special download considerations that none of the other viewers currently employ. Even Meerkat, one of the most advanced by way of special qualities, such as the Backup ability and the long list of environment settings doesn't require this segregated download-only approach.
Unfortunately no, Robert - the problem is that many of the files used by hippo are not freely available for legal redistribution, so the hippo installer downloads them directly from their hosts - which -is- legal.

Welcome to yet another of our client nightmares.
I am trying to install the Hippo Viewer on my Windows machine at work so I
can login to my standalone OpenSim which is also here at work. The installer
tries to go out and grab some additional files for some reason and my
corporate firewall is blocking access. Is there a complete Hippo install I
can download from somewhere?

Thanks,
