[Opensim-users] missing online maptiles

If this is viewer 3 then it's probably to do with not having the MapTileURL set appropriately in [LoginService].  This 
has to be an URL that both you and your friend can reach.

The mapping mechanism in v2 onwards is different than in v1.  In v2 they are served directly via http.
