Dear Gary,
Thank you so much for the orientation.
I created an opensim standalone grid with one region in the other computer with windows 7.
Both the diva d2 grid from the vista computer and the opensim grid from windows 7 computer are working well. From local and from remote.
Let me say what I did:
1-I bypassed the router, making the computer connected straight to the ISP modem.
2-I turned the windows firewall off
3-I turned the avg antivirus off (looks like the people don’t considere the antivirus should block something).
4-I changed the ini files to use my external IP address as you suggested (got from cmd.exe ipconfig)
5-Asked the remote friends to use http://myExternalIPaddress:9000 to login
Then, this work. They was able to connect to the grid from Diva D2 and also to the new grid straight from opensimulator.org intructions.
The conclusion is I have no grid setup problem. The most probable issue is the router. I was using Belkin Surf router.
I bought a new router suggested from the simulator.org list with the most large loopback, the D-Link DGL-4500. Soon I will back here to update.
(Just in case, I bought it by $87 days ago.)
The remaining issues are about the Windows firewall and the Antivirus. About windows firewall, I believe the ports are open well, unless there are
same ports being used by another applications (I don’t have skill enough for this), that make some kind of conflict (only supposition). About the antivirus I will ask them
in case of the handshaking problem remain after install the new router.
Thank you again and I will be back with the conclusion about the new router installation.

Subject: Re: [Opensim-users] Awaiting region handshake
Dmitre,
The value you use for ExternalHostName in your region parameters will be used by the server to pass an IP address to the viewer. For external viewers the address needs to be your the external IP address of your server, not the internal IP address. Due to your #8 your server will pass your internal IP address to the external viewer at handshake time. That will cause the 'Awaiting region handshake' timeout.
Things that you can do that should allow your external users to complete region handshake: (1) Removing the host file entry. (2) Revise the host file entry to be the external IP address. (3) Use the actual external IP address for your region ExternalHoseName value.
The server passes an IP address, not a domain name, to set up the UDP communication (region handshake.) That isn't always apparent in the documentation. It looks like a Hosts file entry will provide the ability to use both an internal and external IP address at the same time. Unfortunately it's not really a solution and causes problems.
Good luck with your further testing.

Subject: [Opensim-users] Awaiting region handshake
I have been following this subject step by step and silently testing the things as suggested. I have this same problem “ Awaiting region handshake” and didn't want to break the
sequence since I realized that each case is a case in this subject. I tried many of the suggestions here and still having the problem.
I have installed Diva D2 distribution working fine from the computers in my Local network even with 127.0.0.1 and domain name:9000.
My friends can't login from remote. Using imprudence, they are able to get grid info and also sign up for an account.
So, I am listing below some info that you guys should ask to understand better my case:
1- OS = Windows Vista
2- Using Diva Distro r-15592 distribution
3- The installation followed the txt files provided and also the slides from Michael_Brade
4- MySql is runing well
5- Windows Firewall: the ports 9000-9003 are open inbound and outbound, TCP and UDP. The grid was tested with firewall on and off.
6- Router: Forwarded to inbound and outbound, 9000-9003, TCP and UDP, using the internal IP 192.168.x.x. Also tested with port 9000 only to TCP and
9000-9003 to UDP, due the some instructions from opensimulator tuto.
7- I got dyndns domain name to use when run configure.exe
8- NAT issue: A line was inserted to the file hosts. internal IP 192.168.x.x SPACE domain name
9- The file divaPreferences.ini is intact
10- The file MyWord.ini show “http://dyndnsdomainname:9000” for all
11- The file RegionConfig.ini shows
InternalAddress = "0.0.0.0"
InternalPort = "9000"
ExternalHostName = "dyndnsdomain name"
(it was the internal IP address. I changed by the logic to domain name. It was before the Internal IP like 192.168.x.x) Anyway I tried both
with no success.
I am sorry about so long email.
I am on this problem about a mounth. But I realized I learned a lot about Opensim. I hope soon I can contribute with the community.
Please, I need help. Say what I have to fix or to do in order to make people connect to my grid.
