Depending on what you have in mind, this might also be useful:
Adapting 3D Controllers for Use in Virtual Worlds
It's basically a device driver which runs on the client side (so, no
need to tweak either OpenSim or SL...) and can be changed to adapt to
other HCI input devices, e.g. force-feedback devices, gloves, etc., at
need. Although I haven't seen the actual code, I was told that it was
reasonably simple to change even for a non-expert Windows programmer.
