Hi Fish - thanks for your response.

I too considered this might be a connection problem, but I have looked
at the logs as well as monitoring my connection, and it has been an almost
constant 6916 kbps (864.5 KB/sec) Down, and 336 kbps (42 KB/sec) Up
for at least 5 months, with only a minor ~ -4 KB/sec  fluctuation at peak
contention/net activity times. At the Australian end, the fluctuations have
been even less during the testing periods.

The confusion for me is that, if I go back to the pre. OCT 5th revisions,
there are not any signs of the problems that I have described, so I'm
fairly convinced (as much as my ignorance allows :)), that some change
in the coding is responsible for the symptoms: but I'm open to any other
suggestions.

btw: forgot to mention, the problem exists regardless of viewer tried -
SL 1.19.x .. SL 1.21.x, Hippo, etc.
