We use doubles for Z coordinates.

Doubles do handle infinite values (although useful numbers are obviously finite), so it is technically +inf/-inf in range.

The statement about "infinite" Z space really doesn't make sense. The Sim Coordinates do not include a "Z' and if they did it would have a finite range.

I'm also thinking  that the notion of a "meter" is a implementation dependent convention. I'd sure like to see more places that have changed the scale on both a micro and macro scale. The "Greenie's Kitchen" sim in SL is an example in this direction.
