Might be basic for most, but just added this and linked from
http://opensimulator.org targeted at the SL and OpenSim content development
community that might be less technical that most.

Install, build, and connect to your very own local standalone OpenSim
running from your Windows desktop. Create and preview content without Second
Life upload fees or lag. Better even than using the SL preview beta grid,
which is often unavailable.
