Though I haven't been into the ODE code specifically, I might be able to help with calibration/improvements/developing tests for physics updates. Is there an entry point you could suggest? What is the current approach to integrating physics updates presently? Are there currently tests that vary the time step size and measure consequences? I'm assuming we're not trying to conserve energy here, so 'good enough' and 'better' physics will be subjective, but there should be reasonable tests with definable tolerances for both regression and validation. I'd be happy to help if I can.
We can expect a week long calibration process, probably every minor
version update.

As far as I know there are a few compelling 'features' that one would
want, though they're not mission critical.

A few that come to mind;
The Sweep and Prune space
The Convex hull-Convex hull collider
Bug Fixes.
