While I was a Linden we were taught to call Sims = Regions and Players
= Residents. I was told that 'Residents' would confuse Sims with the
Avatars on The Sims Online.

I'm surprised they don't have the term "Sim" trademarked as well.
What about all the existing "Grid" names and domains out there??
Everyone is going to have to stop using these??
Examples....
Centralgrid, osgrid, deepgrid, apex-grid, openlifegrid, francogrid and more!
This is going to be bad.... damn... and I just registered one of my own.

In light of this and discussions based off this, I can't help but
think of the future issues regarding this type of problem.
In some form, the OpenSim community needs to have some trademarks of
their own, if not for branding purposes alone,
but for protection against greedy sabotaging Corporate interests that
might see us as a viable threat to their commercail interests.
Not to mention this scenario:
Someone from the OpenSim community gets a bug up their rear and
branches off, creates a product based off OpenSim, then doesn't want
to see any competition.
So what this asshat could do, is sabotage the OpenSim project and take
out their own trademarks/etc... against what we use for coined
phrases/terms/etc...
If we don't create protections in this manner, we could forsee
constant threat by actions like this as time goes on..
Just a thought,

Subject: [Opensim-dev] LindenLab tightens policy on Trademarks
Dear all,
please consider the recent policy change of Linden Lab regarding
their trademarks:
http://blog.secondlife.com/2008/03/24/introducing-the-second-life-brand-center/
The texts on the OS wiki will need to be reviewed within the
announced 90-day period to ensure compliance with
the guidelines set by Linden Lab regarding the use of 'Second
Life' and 'SL'.
Furthermore, I would like to suggest that from now on OS
documentation (and code) should use any of
these trademarks only where it is absolutely necessary.
Cheers, Ezekiel
