To be honest, if there were obvious tips for changes at the source level then I would hope that we would already have
done them :)
I think just the usual kinds of tips that you've outlined apply. If the use case allows it, you might want to consider
implementing any time critical or complex functions in region modules instead. Scripts can still communicate with these
either via modSendCommand() (in OpenSimulator 0.7.3.1 and earlier) or custom functions added by the module (in current
OpenSimulator development code).
