As I figured... 

Has there been any effort in the direction of maybe a different way to
distribute items on the new grids to ensure security?

2. You're correct in some ways.   It really depends on the grid.   I'd
say, most of the time the answer to 1 is no.   If you've got a
completely walled garden (closed grid with properly configured
OpenSimulator), there isn't any way that I know that people can steal
the scripts, but those tend to be few and far between.    You'd also
have to trust the grid operators and region operators.

As a general rule, the answer to question 1 is no.    However, if you
trust a grid operator who runs and maintains all of the regions on the
grid, then the answer to question 1, /may/ be yes.   If the grid
operator allows regions to connect that are outside of their control,
then the answer to question 1 is definately no.
