[Opensim-dev] Hypergrid patch

In theory, I'm +1 on this being core.

I realise we at some stage do need to decide on things being core / not core - I cant justify withholding this on the basis that we have plenty of less deserving things in core right now, and the hypergrid extensions are something I would personally appreciate having the regular testing and checking that goes on core code.

The only potentially criticism may be code quality - I haven't evaluated this (so I'm not saying anything negative - this is in principle), but things going into core should hold a higher standard than extensions, so a patch of this magnitude should probably be evaluated by someone on that basis.

Regards,

Adam

Thanks, that one built properly against 7364, but 7376 (head at the time I tried) complained about some missing references to LLSD. Seems a patch set of this size can go stale quite quickly so hopefully a few of the other core devs can chime in real soon and give it a nod... and then we can work together to commit it. :)

sigh. prebuild.xml was wrong. I uploaded the right one.
I also uploaded the hypergrid extension as a zip file + a small patch to core, instead of as a big patch. I don't trust TortoiseSVN...

The OpenSim API changed from 7325 to 7364, and that affects one method in the hypergrid implementation. The zip conforms to 7364.

The patch does not build in more recent revs in trunk I applied to a fresh checkout of r7364 and got a slew of build errors (see the note I attached to the mantis entry). If we do decide to apply it, it looks like it will require some updating first.

I would support Crista's HyperGrid ideas as forward thinking for OpenSim. All the reports I have heard so far from the users is that the "HyperGrid" idea is a good one.

Hi everyone,

I submitted a patch with the hypergrid extension for your assessment.
http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=2640

Since this is a clear departure from reverse-engineering Second Life,
and a step towards supporting an architecture that Linden Lab doesn't
support (yet), it probably requires discussion :-)
The act of submitting the patch was to start such discussion!

Crista
