Well as Nini supports both ini files and xml files, its not much work to change our config system to be able to read xml files. In fact its such little work, that I just did that. Now it will behave as normal and look for opensim.ini (or a ini filename passed to it via the command line), but if a ini file isn't found will then look for opensim.xml. If that isn't found, it will as normal create a default opensim.ini file. A opensim.example.xml is included in svn.
However as Justin pointed out, this could increase support issues, by increasing new users confusion. And after thinking about it, I think I agree. I could even imagine someone ending up with both a opensim.ini and opensim.xml, and them making a change in opensim.xml and wondering why that change isn't taking effect.
So maybe we do need to stick with one format or the other. If so, I think that has to be ini. Not only are they easier to hand edit, but more importantly they are what we have had until now. So a change would be even more confusion.
But anyway the changes are in svn, but it would be simple to change it back so it only supports ini files. Just want to know what people think.

We may also want to switch OpenSim.ini to an xml file if we want more
nesting. Big OpenSim.ini files definitely seem overwhelming at this
point, though not too unweildly.

There is no silver bullet. Plus, werewolves make better neighbors
than zombies, and they tend to keep the vampire population down.
