Summary0008685: [FEATURE REQUEST] Add support for Avatar Picker
DescriptionAvatar Picker has not been fully functional in Opensim for a long time. Some time ago I found a piece of code for this (xmlrpc) and I now see that it also requires a part of code in opensim to function properly.

See Beta 1.1 Notes @ https://github.com/Mobius-Team/Mobius-Public/tree/beta#beta-11 [^]

The problem with this, as with websearch and other parts, is the requirement for external support structures, which can be a pain, see landtool in php 7.4. When you need to setup a webserver with all sorts of requirements and open API to interface you end up inviting spam and angles for attacks. xmlrpc is quite a bit more difficult to secure because it requires quite a bit of overhead to run checks on the requests, I tried securing the search system as best as possible, the result is a 10x increase in response time.

I also don't see this being much desired, not as much as DisplayNames perhaps or proper group support back in the day. This probably falls under "if you give it to them they'll use" it type of priority if anything.

This is also a feature available in the viewer (v3) and present for many years in your Robust.ini with the mention "work in progress".

Unlike you, I think many users of OpenSim will like this. This has not been abandoned by second life either and they provide a large selection of very pretty and optimized avatars.

It would therefore also limit a little bit all these awfully heavy and complex avatars that make all regions lager.

Avatar Picker and Destination guide are 2 very cool features but unfortunately only Destination Guide currently works.

Note that Destination Guide also needs a webserver, just like websearch or web profile etc etc ...
So again I don't know where the problem is.

So far most folks I met in OpenSim all looked different, none stuck to the default avatars provided by either the registration or through inworld shops. The wish to individualize is strong with most folks so just a set of avatars to pick from is unlikely going to be something they would use all that often. Beside that the list would still need to populated, that either means building them in by default or allowing them to be configured and doing that may not be so simple. I guess you could set it up to use xml appearance, but then what about the assets, they would have to be placed into the users inventory to have access as "remote attach" isn't a thing. Then I also see issues with hypergrid on this, especially with suitcase.

Destination Guide, being a guide allowing for advertising of popular regions or useful stuff does have more use than a handful of avatars to select from, which, given the website interface can be done via inventory data copy already(it's how I do default avatars currently). I just don't hear folks crying for this, not compared to how many still want DisplayNames.

Just because a viewer has a function does not mean it makes sense. The most standard viewers have flickr and facebook functionality built in and I don't see that being used or rather, I have not heard of anyone complaining it being removed from OpenSim-connected viewers. Remember, SL is not a hard spec, not everything they have and do make sense in the different world that is OpenSim nor is it something that OpenSim needs to be. Frankly, given the options we have over them OpenSim is already better in a lot of ways than SL ever was so it can more than afford not to try to imitate it anymore.

But that is just my opinion on the matter, I find more pressing issues to resolve before tackling things that have limited use. :)

Obviously Avatar Picker is also appreciated by osCore2 @ https://github.com/osCore2/osCore2/tree/osCore2DN#oscore2-05-alpha-with-displayname-support [^]

@Tampa : You will certainly appreciate the support of DisplayName (with utf8mb4) also already implemented

I don't think DisplayNames are a good idea given how OpenSim works and how things are within the metaverse. When the code for them was created two years ago I was against them for a number of reasons, most of which you can read on the original request for them to be added, nothings changed since then. Still not a good idea in my view.
