Summary0007597: Ghost parcel lines since change to limit distance parcel data is sent out to viewers.
DescriptionSince the commit (30f9e5372e7b999ace8334825237a3512c9e40fb) on 4th May to only send parcel data for a limited distance around the avatar, I have been seeing parcel lines in the viewer that do not exist. I have seen this in two separate regions.

The image shows a screenshot including the mini map with show parcel lines enabled. I have edited the map in the picture to show the parcels that should be there in green, and those that do not exist in red. These phantom lines are also shown on the ground in world when the viewer is set to show them, also shown in the image. Notice how the parcel only has 3 sides with lines ending abruptly. This parcel seems to be a ghost of a real parcel as shown on the mini map further north. Also as i moved around the ghost parcel, its position would occasionally jump back and forth about 8 meters.

This is a 2x2 var region, to get singularity to show parcel lines for var regions correctly on the mini map, requires an alpha viewer.
The ghost parcel lines seen on the terrain are visible in both Singularity and Firestorm in the same location.

Restarting the region doesn't help either.

This might be another case where limiting what is sent to the viewer depending on avatar position is the wrong logic, since parcel outlines should also show when you move the camera far from the avatar. This is something I do often when checking parcel boundaries, often having turned off object rendering to see the parcel lines more clearly. Then move the camera (but not the avatar) over many regions to check things.

An unrelated change to OpenSim for selective terrain loading also limited the terrain to near the avatar and ignored the camera and viewer set max view distance... http://opensimulator.org/mantis/view.php?id=7592 [^]

Don't think is wrong logic, its just not supported by current viewers that try to show all terrain even outside view range.
What is the state of this issue on current master?

With current master 0.9.0 738 (15-Sep-2016) if the avatar is placed in one region, and the you swing the camera far away beyond the view distance then the terrain and objects do not show at all, they are chopped off. With Second Life you can swing the camera FAR FAR way from the avatar, I just tested it with my usual 256m or 512m view distances in Firestorm and swinging the camera position 5 regions (each 256x256) away from the avatar with no problems showing the terrain, plants and 3D objects at that point.

Prior to the changes to limit OpenSim content the view can use to avatar position (rather than current camera position) I think worked as expected and as Second Life. Now things get cut off with an abrupt edge and you can see under the raised terrain at the cut off point when the camera is swung further away.

currently we can only use avatar position for content send control.
the previous use of camera position creates excessive load.
Another way to handle camera needs to be found.

I appreciate these issues arose when trying to find a reasonable way to handle large varsized regions. Maybe the logic could be special and more limited and accept the chop off issues when handling those, and the previous behavioir can be restored for normal sized regions. The content showing for those when moving the camera far from the avatar did not seem to be an issue previously.

just don't use the terrain option.
I didn't disable it completely for testing purposes, since as reported it does now work well.
we do need to send the entire terrain (patchs and parcel info), bc viewers always try do display without view distance limit, and so display ugly edges and even auxiliary objects, usually hidden like a blue plane.
the only thing you may notice is that near terrain patchs are sent faster, then the rest at a slower pace, for performance reasons.
