Summary0005337: Hypergrid visitor shows as Unknown User in chat and for object properties even when labelled correctly in viewer
DescriptionA visitor from OSGrid to Openvue grid ( was observed by my avatar on Openvue. He was labelled correctly in the avatar name label over the avatar in the viewer (Neo.Cortex but in chat appeared as "Unknown User" in SL Viewer 2.4.0. The label used in chat was "Neo Cortex" in SL Viewer 1.23.5.

When the visitor created an object on the Openvue grid, the creator and owner as observed by my avatar inspecting the object continued to appear as Unknown User (in both SL Viewer 2.4.0 and 1.23.5).

See attached screen snapshots for evidence.

Visitor was from OSGrid on 19-Jan-2011.

OpenSim ROBUST and OpenSim.exe servers using 0.7.1 dev master as at 18-Jan-2010 r/14806

Neo Cortex was using Hippo 0.5.1 and also tested in Imprudence 1.3.0 stable. He reports that the created object shows as Neo Cortex and NOT Neo.Cortex in his viewer. See attached screenshots.

The self-viewer always reports creator/owner fields of objects created by self as First Last. There's no way around that.

If an observer sees those fields as Unknown User it's because the visitor's HGAssets service on his grid is not properly set up. He's probably still using the prior configuration with the normal asset server.

Thanks for the note on the "Self View" in a viewer Diva... I had not realised that. Will watch out for it in future when testing.

Neo Cortex was visiting from OSGrid, so I assume the HG asset services are from there. And they are on a release from 5-Jan-2011 I believe. Most HG teleport stuff is working since the Robust servers were upgraded on 5-Jan-2011. But does that mean that OSGrid is still not configured properly for HG asset transfer and creator/owner reporting use?

Note also that the chat name in viewer 2.4.0 showed as "Unknown User" whereas it showed "Neo Cortex" (with no qualification) in Viewer 1.23.5. Is that a poblem with avatar name processing in Viewer 2 variants due to the display name changes perhaps?

WRT OSGrid assets: good question! I know they have a special asset server internally; I don't know what they're doing for HG asset access. I'll check.

WRT the other question: I don't know.

I am still seeing this problem -- the original description. I hypergridded from my own grid ( over to OSGrid. People there had the right things hovering over their avatars. However, in chat, everybody was identified as "Unknown User". This occurred using Phoenix Firestorm, a v2/v3-based viewer.

In Imprudence, a v1-based viewer, everything was fine.

I am running a post-0.7.3 version of opensim, built from commit 1f34c827 on Wed Jun 13 04:05:02 2012 +0100

Note that at present (1-Mar-2015) the OSGrid addon region distribution does NOT have a line in it to enable the newly added display names code. Hence the issues currently in dev master with display name code are not arising on OSGrid add oin regions using the recommended distribution for add on regions.

But if the following is added to OpenSim.ini...

    Cap_GetDisplayNames = "localhost"

(which is in the default OpenSim.ini.example) then unknown user and other avatar and NPC name issues arise. They can also be avoided for now by explicitly setting

    Cap_GetDisplayNames = ""
