I have tested llGetLinkNumberOfSides() in OpenSimulator (OSGrid); behavior matches what is experienced in SecondLife. screenshot
A scripter more than a prim-torturer, I cannot be certain that I have tried every possible permutation for modifying prims (path cut, hole, profile cut, etc.). But the fxn seems to accurately return the number of a child prim's faces as compared to llGetNumberOfSides from within each prim.
What else is needed to test a fxn?
